South Carolina gives Will Muschamp new $28 million deal

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina coach Will Muschamp received a new six-year, $28.2 million contract after a nine-win season that culminated with a victory over Michigan in the Outback Bowl.

Muschamp's contract was approved Friday by the school's board of trustees.

The former Gators coach, who is 15-11 in two seasons at South Carolina, will make $4.2 million in the fall. His salary will increase by $200,000 over each year of the agreement, peaking at $5.2 million in 2023.

South Carolina has had six seasons with nine or more wins in program history.

The returning assistants also got raises, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson to $1.2 million annually and offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon to $650,000 annually.

EASON LEAVES GEORGIA: Sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason said he is leaving Georgia, an expected decision after he lost his starting job to Jake Fromm. According to reports, he is expected to transfer to Washington. Eason played high school football at Lake Stevens, Wash., and would be in position to become the starter after sitting out a year under NCAA transfer rules.

ARIZONA: The Wildcats reportedly have offered their coaching job to Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo. Niumatalolo was reportedly recommended to replace the fired Rich Rodriguez by Dick Tomey, Arizona's coach from 1987 to 2000.

UCONN: Former Chicago Bears offensive assistant coach John Dunn was named Huskies offensive coordinator. He replaces Rhett Lashlee, who left for the same position at SMU.

OKLAHOMA: Drake Stoops, son of former head coach Bob, committed to the Sooners as a 2018 preferred walk-on, which guarantees a roster spot but not a scholarship. He is a 5-11, 175-pound receiver at Norman (Okla.) High. His uncle Mike is OU's defensive coordinator.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: South Carolina forward A'ja Wilson missed practice due to a sprained right ankle but said she is ready to face Tennessee on Sunday (1, ESPN2). … UConn freshman guard Andra Espinoza-Hunter will transfer. She averaged two points and seven minutes per game.
