Things get real at the Tampa Museum of Art, cool off at Cool Art Show

Got To Be Real: Photorealism at the Tampa Museum of Art

Photorealism, the genre of art in which paintings and drawings are rendered with such precision that they look photographic, is truly a marvel. So prepare to be amazed by the Tampa Museum of Art's Photorealism: 50 Years of Hyperrealistic Painting exhibition, which opens Thursday. The exhibit traces the evolution of the genre, named by the art dealer Louis K. Meisel, from 1960 to today. Featuring three generations of photorealist painters, the show contains some of the genre's heavyweights, including Chuck Close, Richard Estes, Audrey Flack and Ralph Goings, whose work is pictured. Tampa is the only American stop on the exhibit's international tour, organized by an institute in Germany. It opens at 10 a.m. and remains on display through Oct. 22 at 120 W Gasparilla Plaza. tampamuseum.org.

Designing Women: 13 on the 13th

Creatives Exchange Artist Collective comprises local professional women artists and creators, and they'll showcase their talents at the HCC Ybor Campus Art Gallery in the 13 on the 13th exhibition, opening Thursday. Expect diverse work from the 13 artists, including sculpture by Kim Radatz (pictured), painting from Candace Knapp and a site-specific, audience participation piece (always cool) by Victoria Jorgensen. Themes explored are family relationships, the current political climate and the concept of haves and have-nots. The show runs through Aug. 3 in the performing arts building at 2204 N 15th St., Tampa.

Chill Out: Cool Art Show

Perhaps some of the indoor makers markets got the idea from the Cool Art Show, which returns to St. Petersburg's historic Coliseum on Saturday and Sunday. Maybe not, but this show has been providing a sweat-free art experience for 29 years now, at least making it one of the oldest of its kind locally. And you can still expect the consistent quality of artists, many of them award-winners represented in galleries and museums worldwide. Presented by the Professional Association of Visual Artists, 75 fine artists and crafters were selected to exhibit this year, working in paint, wood, ceramics, photography, metal, glass, fiber, mixed media and jewelry. The show is free to attend and runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 535 Fourth Ave. N. Parking is also free.
